1. What is 1% for Women?
1% for Women is Bluebird Refuge’s community-wide initiative to accompany women in motherhood and awaken hope in pregnancy.

We do this by building symbolic nest boxes—life-giving care and meaningful connection—where each of us gives a little to make a meaningful impact for women right where we live and work.

2. What’s the difference between a membership, my pledge, and my donation?
Your membership contribution is paid to Bluebird Refuge to advance the 1% for Women movement through outreach, resources, and materials that make life-giving care more visible. When you sign up, you receive a Nest Bundle to help you get started.

Your annual 1% pledge is your commitment to give 1% in a way that fits your life or business.

Your donation is how you fulfill that pledge: by giving money, materials, services, or volunteer time directly to one or more certified 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners of your choice. You may fulfill your pledge at any time during the year. No part of your 1% donation goes through Bluebird Refuge.

3. How does my membership in 1% for Women help my community?
Our focus is supporting women in motherhood, especially those who are considering their next steps in pregnancy. Women need to see and hear life-giving voices offering reassurance, encouragement, and support for themselves and their babies. Your membership directly strengthens the support network during these critical times. By contributing to certified 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners, you help women find help, hope, and refuge when it’s most needed.

4. Do I get to choose where my 1% goes?
Yes! Your pledge as a member of 1% for Women is fulfilled with your direct donation to one or more certified 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners of your choice. Participating nonprofits provide at least one direct low- or no-cost service to women who are pregnant or parenting.

No part of your one percent goes through Bluebird Refuge; it is a direct gift from you to them.

5. How do I give my 1% donation?
1) Select one or more of our certified 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners.
2) Give donations of money, materials, services, or volunteer time directly to the organization(s) of your choice. No part of your one percent goes through Bluebird Refuge; it is a direct gift from you to them.

6. Why join 1% for Women if I already donate to nonprofits?
Every membership symbolizes a collective advancement of a culture working to uphold the dignity of every human being in the communities where we live and work.

Through 1% for Women, your membership helps:

• Demonstrate commitment to supporting women in a life-giving way

• Increase awareness of the Story of the Bluebird and its two important messages: the good that can come from unified efforts and the perseverance women demonstrate in motherhood

• Expand the reach of pregnancy and parenting services by magnifying their visibility to the women and families who need them

• Advance the movement of accompaniment—from conversation over tea to simple acts of service in daily life

• Awaken hope and joy for women who feel alone, unsupported, hurting, and uncertain

7. What if the nonprofit I want to support is not listed?
Growing our 1% for Women list of Nonprofit Partners is an ongoing process, and we appreciate your efforts to identify life-giving organizations that provide at least one direct low- or no-cost service to women in one of these areas:

• Women’s Health: Full or limited medical care, including pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, prenatal education, STI testing/treatment, pregnancy options, postpartum, and more

• Material Assistance: Maternal and child clothing, diapers, food pantry assistance, domestic needs, or transportation

• Mental Health & Wellness: Emotional, trauma, spiritual support, addiction, or mental health services

• Legal & Financial Counseling: Guidance on legal and financial matters related to family, employment or housing

• Social/Life Services: Life skills, health, and parenting education; childcare; case management; career counseling; and referrals for additional pregnancy and parenting support services

• Housing & Shelter: Long-term or short-term emergency or permanent housing, including domestic violence shelters, maternity housing, and after-care maternal housing

8. Is my donation tax deductible?
Donations to 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners are tax-deductible when given directly to them. However, 1% for Women membership contributions are not tax-deductible, as Bluebird Refuge is not a 501(c)(3). Please consult a tax professional for guidance on specific tax matters.

9. Is 1% for Women a political action organization?
No, we focus on supporting women in motherhood, irrespective of politics. We are interested in creating subcultures of love and accompaniment within our local communities that exclaims support for women who are pregnant and parenting.

10. Can I give more than 1%?
Yes, additional contributions are welcome.

11. What are 1% for Women membership options?
Hope & Joy Membership
Hope & Joy Members are businesses committed to doing good for women in motherhood. Members make an annual pledge to give one percent from total company revenue—or from a specific brand, product line, or service—to one or more certified 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners. These donations support nonprofits that provide at least one direct low- or no-cost pregnancy and parenting service to women. Members receive a Nest Box featuring thoughtfully curated products from the Bluebird Refuge tea, coffee, and gift shop, resources to help advance the movement, and the rights to use 1% for Women logos.

I. Minimum annual revenue of $25,000 is required for product line or service commitment, resulting in a total annual gift of at least $250 to a 1% for Women Nonprofit Partner.

II. Revenue is defined as gross receipts or sales after adjustments for discounts, allowances, and returns. Revenue and donation amounts are used solely for certification. Your information is kept strictly confidential and will never be made public.

Bluebird Membership
Members include individuals, families, and foundations pledging to annually support our certified nonprofit partners who offer pregnancy and parenting services. Donations may be monetary gifts, materials, volunteer assistance, or a combination of these. Members receive a Nest Bundle featuring thoughtfully curated products from the Bluebird Refuge tea, coffee, and gift shop, along with resources to help advance the movement.

In addition to membership, learn about nonprofit partnership and no-cost advocate participation.

12. How much does a 1% for Women membership cost?
Your membership contribution is paid to Bluebird Refuge, whereas your tax-deductible commitment is donated directly to one or more 1% for Women Nonprofit Partners.

Bluebird Membership — for individuals, families, and foundations
There are two pathways for becoming a Bluebird member.

Sip Pathway: Join our Tea Club or Tea for Two Club. As long as your club membership is active, so is your Bluebird Membership.

Support Pathway: Give a financial gift to advance the movement and help more women find the help they need. This includes a Nest Bundle (curated products from our shop to advance the movement) and a Digital Nest Kit (electronic toolkit to share information with others). $10 monthly with a $35 sign-up fee, or $140/year. If you choose monthly support, you can discontinue your membership at any time. Please contact us 15 days prior to your next monthly transaction.

13. How are 1% for Women membership contributions utilized?
Contributions cover costs associated with:
• Certifying businesses and nonprofit organizations
• Advancing the movement through marketing and outreach
• Providing curated Bluebird Refuge products and movement materials
• Increasing visibility for participating members through website listings and future publications

14. How can my school or community organization support 1% for Women?
Your school or community organization can advocate for the advancement of 1% for Women through a tea gathering, fundraiser for one of our nonprofit partners, or sharing Bluebird Refuge tea, apparel, and resources like our book 9 Days of Refuge to help make life-giving care more visible in your community.
